The Suwałki Special Economic Zone was established in 1996, and is situated in north-eastern Poland, in the geographical center of Europe. The main European communication and transport routes intersect here, leading from the north to the south and from the east to the west of Europe. The important transit routes, e.g. Berlin - Warsaw - Grodno - Saint Petersburg, Warsaw - Tallinn (part of Via Baltica), or a section of the Via Carpatia all pass through the zone. The Rail Baltica - a railway route that is part of the trans-European transport corridor also runs through the zone. The Suwałki Special Economic Zone covers all the Poviats of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, 2 Poviats of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship: Ełcki and Gołdap, and 4 Poviats of the Masovian Voivodeship: Łosicki, Ostrów, Sokołów and Węgrów. The area of the Zone covers 26,414 km² (2,641,400 ha).
