New investment in Zawiercie

One of the largest battery recycling plants in Europe was built in Zawiercie. AE Elemental, a joint venture of Ascend Elements, based in the USA, and Elemental Strategic Metals, based in Poland, have chosen our country as the location of the first commercial recycling plant for batteries for electric vehicles. As PAIH, we have been supporting both companies from the very beginning of their operation in Poland.

The newly built plant in Zawiercie can process 12,000 tons of used lithium-ion batteries per year – or about 28,000 EV battery packs per year. The plants will disassemble, discharge and shred EV batteries to produce black mass that can be used to produce new EV battery materials, including cathode active material (CAM) and cathode precursor (pCAM). Commercial-scale lithium extraction capabilities will be added to the new facility in autumn 2024 to achieve operational readiness by 2026.

The official opening of the investment, which was attended by a delegation from PAIH, took place on the 19th September this year.
