LuNa Smelter in Kigali is a success of a Polish investment on the African market

The visit of Anna Leśnodorska, Deputy Director of PAIH’s Export Support Department for Africa and the Middle East, is part of the Agency's activities for the development of economic cooperation with African markets. It shows the growing potential of partnership between Poland and African countries in the area of critical raw materials and modern industry.
Talks with the company's authorities concerned, among other things in particular, the development of the company's presence in neighbouring markets, potential investment activities and building wider Polish-Rwandan cooperation in the critical raw materials sector.
LuNa Smelter is the first tin mill in Africa to be RMAP (Responsible Minerals Assurance Process) certified, confirming the compliance of production processes with international standards for responsible sourcing. The company was developed by the Polish investment group Luma Holding in cooperation with a Rwandan partner.
The company acquired and modernized the Kigali smelter in 2018, creating a state-of-the-art tin refining plant of strategic importance to the East African region. Currently, LuNa Smelter specializes in the production of so-called "conflict-free minerals", ensuring full traceability of the origin of raw materials and compliance with global standards of a responsible supply chain.
The plant processes approximately 200-230 tons of cassiterite concentrate per month and produces refined tin with a purity of 99.97 percent SN. Production includes, among other things, standard tin of LME grade, low-lead tin and high-purity tin intended for demanding industrial sectors, such as electronics or modern production technologies.
LuNa Smelter is currently in the process of further development and capacity increase. The company plans both to develop its own mining assets and to expand its sourcing of raw materials in the East Africa region. The investments include the expansion of infrastructure, laboratories and the implementation of modern technological and operational solutions.
One of the key strengths of the LuNa Smelter is the company's advanced Chain of Custody (CoC) system, developed to ensure full traceability of minerals - from the mine to the final product. The CoC system is implemented in cooperation with the European Partnership for Responsible Minerals. The company regularly undergoes audits and compliance assessments conducted as part of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), strengthening its position as a responsible and transparent partner in the global minerals supply chain.
