DID YOU KNOW...?
The end of the Australian automotive industry has come?
On Friday morning, General Motors factory in Adelaide, put out the last Holden Commodore car, ending not only the factory but also the entire Australian automotive industry.
- When the doors of the Holden factory will be closed, it will mean the end of the Australian automotive industry for good - said John Camillo, Secretary of the industry workers union headquarters in South Australia, where the factory is located. Last year, the factory shut down the US-based Ford, which has been producing cars since 1925. At the beginning of this month, the Toyota plant also was closed by the Japanese giant Toyota, which in 1954 began manufacturing cars in Australia for the first time.
Australia for a number of years remained on list of top automotive producers in the world. Australians are severely affected by the dusk of their car industry. Leader of the opposition Labor Party, Bill Shorten and representatives of his shadow cabinet, found this to be a tragic event, and the Liberal leaders were accused of killing the auto factories. Liberals in 2013 decided to cut $ 500 million of grants for the car factories, which in the past decade amounted to $ 7 billion. Soon after, Ford announced that, it would close its car plant in Australia, and a few months later announced it also GM. It was a domino effect, so in the end Toyota, which is now the leader on the Australian market, had to shut down its plant as well.
Australia is also considered to be one of the richest countries in the world, and in fact rich people in choosing cars rarely follow local patriotism. These factors have led to a fragmentation in the automotive market, where importers have successfully rivaled the native production of Australian factories. This year, Poland's exports to Australia have clearly increased. By the end of August we shipped 460 million euros worth of goods, almost half of the year's value. To this growth contributed the Opel Gliwice factory, which since the end of last year started producing a compact Astra model, decorated with the logo of the Holden red lion. It is not known how long the cars from Gliwice will be sent to Antipodes. In August, Opel acquired the French concern Peugeot-Citroen (PSA). And although the PSA has for some time to provide GM cars such as the Holden Astra from Gliwice, it is unknown how long this cooperation will last.
