PAIH supported food producers in filling a niche in Singapore

The shipment of Polish food products to Singapore is the result of the support provided to Polish producers by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH). Contracts fill the gap after key suppliers in that region and pave the way for Polish companies on this new market.

In 2019, Polish exports reached a record value of 235.8 billion EUR and increased by 5.5%. Despite pre-pandemic results, this year there will definitely be a significant decrease. Some of the forecasts say that the drop may even be as high as 18%, compared to last year. With a view to helping Polish companies, the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) has developed new tools that support them in their business abroad. Among them is information on newly created export opportunities and market niches.

Singapore was one of the markets that had to look for new suppliers due to the "Covid crisis". As much as 90% of food demand in this country is covered by imports from over 170 countries - including Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States. - Singapore is a very sensitive market, to any disruption in supply continuity, and the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the continuity. In response to this situation, Singapore announced a demand in the agricultural produce and food sector and has begun extensive diversification of supply - explains Anna Tukalska, the Business Development Manager in PAIH’s office in Singapore.

PAIH informed about the possibility of selling agricultural produce and food products on the Singapore market, at the turn of March and April. As a result, towards the end of May, Polish producers signed the first contracts with local distributors. - Together with the Polish Embassy in Singapore and thanks to the involvement of Polish food industry organizations and institutions, we promoted Polish food suppliers, and our office supported them in their contacts with Singapore’s importers. The result of this synergy was the introduction of several Polish exporters to the Singapore Market - points out Anna Tukalska.

Among the seven companies that have entered the market are, among others, the producer of eggs, Fermy Drobiu Woźniak, Quadrum Foods and the Warmińskie Zakłady Przetwórstwa Owocowo-Ważywnego 'KWIDZYN' offering frozen vegetables and the producer of frozen salmon FREEZCO.

- We have received information that the first transport of our eggs, which we sent in May, has already reached our client in Singapore. This was achieved partly thanks to the great support of the Polish Trade and Investment Agency. These difficult times have challenged the export market. Therefore, we are even more proud of the fact, that we as a Polish producer, were in a position to support this exotic market- Singapore - says Barbara Woźniak, plenipotentiary of the board of Fermy Drobiu Woźniak.

- PAIH’s experts contacted us with several potential partners and we could count on their support throughout the entire negotiation period. This is our first and, I hope, not the last delivery to Singapore. I believe that consumers there will appreciate the high quality of our products - says Michał Jęczmyk, Vice President for trade, of the Management Board, WZPOW KWIDZYN.

Anna Tukalska emphasizes that the May contracts are the first deliveries of Polish agricultural produce and food products to Singapore. - We are dealing with ground breaking transactions. Until now, Polish apples and blueberries, Polish beer and on a small-scale confectionary, were the only products that appeared on the Singapore market. However, we hope, that this is the beginning of cyclical deliveries and the constant presence not only on this, but also in other markets of Southeast Asia. Singapore, which is worth remembering, is a commercial hub that redistributes nearly 25% of the goods it imports - points out PAIH’s expert.
