A strategic investor for Silesia with a Polish government grant

South Korean SK Innovation will build its first European factory of battery separators for electric cars in D±browa Górnicza, southern Poland. The ceremonial signing of the grant agreement took place on October 2, 2019 in D±browa Górnicza.

SK Innovation is one of the largest South Korean companies in the energy and chemical sector. The company deals with the processing of petroleum substances, manufactures chemicals, as well as batteries for electric cars and their components. – This is the South Korean company’s first investment  in Poland and in Europe. At the new plant, to be built in the Katowice Special Economic Zone in D±browa Górnicza, the investor will produce up to 470 million square metres of lithium-ion battery separators for electric cars. By the end of 2021, it will have employed at least 300 workers  – said dr. Janusz Michałek, President of the Katowice Special Economic Zone (Katowice SEZ).

Jerzy Kwieciński, the Minister of Investment and Development, stated that Poland focuses on  investors who may potentially innovate the country's economic environment.
- This investment, not only offers highly-paid jobs, but above all, it provides the Polish economy with the transfer of high technology and  increases  employees' knowledge and skills - said Mr. Kwieciński. He also stressed the crucial role of  graduates from Silesian high schools and universities, with whom the investor will start to cooperate.

- Electromobility is one of the most technologically advanced industries in Poland. That is why the SK Innovation project is important to us. We have joined the investor at a very early stage. We have provided the company with location advise as soon as they selected a country to implement this investment. I am convinced that the investment in D±browa Górnicza is just the beginning of our cooperation. Investing in Poland was an excellent decision for SK Innovation. This is where the heart of electromobility  beats in Europe. Further investments from the sector will soon be implemented in our country. The agency(PAIH) supports 18 projects related to electromobility, totalling a value of EUR 4 billion - said Grażyna Ciurzyńska, Acting President of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency.

- We currently produce 360 million square metres of lithium-ion separators in Jeungpyeong, South Korea. Thanks to our  new investments in China and Poland, starting from the Q4 2021, our company's production capacity will increase to 1.2 billion square metres per year -  revealed Jae Sok Rho, President of SK IE Technology Co., Ltd.

Companies operating in the Katowice Special Economic Zone have already invested over PLN 36 billion and created 80,000 new jobs.
